People born after 1990 will probably find it hard to believe, but in the not too distant past you didn't go to the local store or supermarket to buy milk, instead milk was delivered direct to almost ever household in Switzerland.

To receive the milk in as practical and organised a way as possible, the Swiss mailbox was adapted so that a part of the box was left unlocked. This allowed the young man in blue cotton overalls to make his early morning deliveries as efficiently as possble. Although some time has now past since the milk delivery boy hung up his milk bottles, the milk box remains an important part of the design of even brand new mail boxes, and not just out of a sense of nostalgia. Apart from receiving your daily milk, the box was also useful for receiving small packages and a hundred other small things that made all of our lives easier.

In modern times the Milk Box is taking on yet another incarnation ... more and more often now, the milk box is being used as a place where a key box can be installed as an alternative to fixing it to a wall. The key safe was designed to provide a safe, controlled environment in which you can safely store your house keys. Whilst the original key box was designed to be fixed to a wall, it soon became apparent that this was not suitable for all installations and over the intervening years many variations have been brought to market including the padlock style key box, the door mounted keysafe and the key safe auto which is designed to be attached to a car window.

The requirement to affix a key safe to a post box or milk box is relatively new but this is becoming more and more popular for three main reasons :
  • Many people who rent houses or appartments are unable to, or do not wish to, make a permanent fixing to a wall.

  • Almost every home in switzerland has a post box or milk box.

  • Home care companies require a key box to be fitted. Fixing to a milk box is often seen as the easiest solution.

So how can you fix a key safe to a milk box and which model key safes are best adapted to these installations ?

How to install your Key box in your letterbox

There are 3 main options for fixing a Key box inside of a milkbox as follows :

1. Installing your key box using glue

We recommend Pattex adhesive as it forms a very strong bond, it can withstand a wide temperature range and it is easy to use.

To install a key box using these glues you should :
  • Clean the rear surface of the milk box that you wish to attach to

  • decide exactly where the safe will be attached remembering to leave a small gap between the bottom of the safe and floor of the milk box. Use a 50mm spacer (or larger) to create this gap.

  • Apply the glue to the rear of the key box following the manufacturers instructions as written on the packaging.

  • Hold the key safe in place until the glue starts to dry and it can support its own weight.

  • While the glue continues to dry, place a suitable object under the key box to help support its weight while it dries.

2. Installing your key box using bolts and nuts

This method is only suitable for stand alone mail boxes where the rear of the mail box is accessible both from the interior and exterior.

Whilst the key box will have fixing holes in the rear, the milk box is very unlikely to have corresponding fixing holes. You will therefore need a drill, a drill bit suitable for metal, and a pen for marking the metal.
  • It is easiest to drill the holes from the rear. Place the key box on the rear wall of the post box and mark the fixing points by drawing through the fixing holes.

  • Ensure that the holes will allow the safe to be positions 50mm or more above the floor of the milk box when affixed.

  • Firstly drill one of the lower holes, then place the key box over this hole on the inside of the milk box to ensure that you have the correct position before drilling the 3 remaining holes

  • Once all holes are drilled, the key box can be fixed using 4 suitable bolts and nuts. We advise using blocked nuts, with the nut being installed on the inside.

3. Installing your key box with Velcro

When you receive your key safe you will also receive a 10cm by 5cm strip of heavy duty, stick on Velcro. Simply attach the Velcro to the rear of the key box, then attach this to the back of your post box.

Once the key safe has been attached, the velcro gives a solid, but non permanent fixing. The Velcro has double sided adhesive tape that safely holds up to 7kg per 50mm x 100mm, so will require a fairly significant force to remove it.

4. Installing your Magnetic key box

The simplest to attach, with metal letter boxes simply attach the key box to the rear of the safe using the strong magnets. If the letter box is not metal, then the metal fixing plate supplied with the key box should be attached using the double sided tape supplied.

When using glue or bolts and nuts, some basic rules should be followed :
  • For key boxes with doors hinged at the bottom of the safe (such as the Masterlock 5401), make sure that there is a minimum 50mm clearance under the safe to allow the door to fully open.

  • With hinged door key boxes, attach to the rear wall to make changing the code as simple as possible.
