A real example from our own holiday rental
We used this system ourselves when renting out a holiday property. On arrival, guests took the key-safe set, opened the property and collected their normal set of keys from inside. They then immediately returned the key-safe set to the safe. This meant that a spare set remained available outside the property throughout the stay.
One evening, guests went to a restaurant and accidentally left their keys there. When they realised, they hurried back to the restaurant, but by then it had closed. We lived in another town, so contacting us late at night or early in the morning would not have solved the immediate problem. Finding an emergency locksmith at midnight would also have been difficult and expensive. Instead, the guests simply opened the key safe, used the emergency set to get back into the property, and collected their normal keys from the restaurant the following morning.
At check-out the routine worked in reverse: the guests left their normal set of keys inside the property, locked the property using the key-safe set and then returned that set to the key safe. The keys were then safely available again for the next guests or for managing the property.
Our tip for holiday rentals: do not use the key safe only for check-in. Keep a separate emergency set in the safe throughout the guest’s stay. A lost or forgotten key can then remain a small inconvenience instead of becoming a late-night lockout.

Choose
The right holiday-home key safe depends on security level, visibility and how often it is used. For rentals, simple operation and reliability matter most.
Robust option for frequent use
For regular rentals, a stronger or well-fixed key safe is usually the better choice.
- Fixed access point
- Simple changeable code
- Good for frequent use
- Suitable for guests and cleaners
Discreet option for apartments
If the key safe should not be visible on the outside wall, a more discreet or protected position may be better.
- Less visible
- Useful for apartments
- Protected position possible
- Good for spare-key access

Managing guest codes
Change the code regularly between bookings and only share it with current guests or authorised people. Avoid obvious codes and always test a new code with the key safe open.
