A real example from our own family
When our children were old enough to travel to and from school on their own, we initially gave our eldest an emergency house key to carry. According to him, it was always safely in his bag — except, remarkably, every time he actually needed it. Different days meant different bags for school, sport and other activities, and the key somehow tended to be in the other bag.
From about the age of eight, our children instead used the key safe whenever they came home and, for whatever reason, we were not there. They never needed to carry their own house keys. The system worked extremely well; we only had a problem when one simple rule was not followed: take the key from the safe, unlock the door and immediately put the key back in the safe.
The same idea works across generations. I do not have a key to my parents’ house. If I arrive and they happen to be out — which happens quite frequently — I use the key from their key safe. They do not need to give me a permanent house key, but I can still get in when necessary.

Frequently asked questions about family key safes
At what age can a child use a key safe?
There is no single age. A child needs to be able to operate the mechanism, remember the code and understand that the code must remain private. In our own family, our children started using the key safe from about the age of eight.
Is this better than giving a child an emergency key to carry?
For us it was much more practical. A carried key moved between school and sports bags and somehow was not always in the right bag on the day it was needed. The key safe keeps the key in the same place at home.
What happens if my child loses a house key they carry?
Apart from the immediate problem of somebody potentially finding the key, replacing a lost key can be inconvenient and can be particularly costly if it is a protected or security key. Keeping the emergency key in a key safe avoids the need for the child to carry it around.
What is the most important rule for children?

Can I change the family code?

Do I have to drill the building?
